Artist Profile: Kaytranada

Kaytranada

The Radio Starmaker Fund continues to play an integral part in the advancement of Kaytranada, and we can undoubtedly say that the investments from Starmaker have been a significant driver in progressing Kaytranada's career. Being able to increase our marketing reach has directly led to increased album consumption and awareness which has helped Kaytranada earn some impressive recent accolades. In December 2019 Kaytranada dropped his highly anticipated sophomore album, Bubba. The project has been well received both commercially with over 230 million streams on Spotify, and critically as well, earning Kaytranada two Grammy Awards, a Juno Award and a spot on the Polaris Prize Shortlist. Kaytranada has always taken risks, and a large part of what makes him so successful is his ability to create music that is authentic to him, while still making it accessible to a mass audience.

These risks stretch beyond the creation of music, branching out to all areas of Kaytranada's career. While live music in the traditional form has essentially been non-existent for the last year and a half, this didn't stop Kaytranada from playing “live shows”. One such example is the back-to-back livestream events that Kaytranada self-produced from the Société Des Arts Technologiques in Montreal. These ticketed events were held in November of 2020 and streamed at different times to capture a wide global audience from various time zones. This was not a typical livestream, rather Kaytranada incorporated a lot of advanced technology, visual effects and helped employ a large staff of tech workers, allowing them to earn wages at a time where many were left without any gigs. These self-produced shows also helped support an opportunity to record a “live” session with Charlotte Day Wilson, which was played on the Jimmy Fallon Show. In addition to domestic marketing funding to support the release of Bubba, the Radio Starmaker Fund also helped support these broadcasts through the Orion program, allowing Kaytranada to take this financial risk, helping him to promote his album, keep workers employed and provide fans with live content.
