“‘Like A Man’ is steeped in my recognizing that I am in the family business. Despite my efforts to carve out a different identity, really I belong to a long line of people who have embraced their father’s business. And to have my father pronounce that I have world-class love songs on my record - ‘Like A Man’ and ‘What Other Guy’ - is a deeply gratifying compliment”
– Adam Cohen
There was something magical about this project from the outset. From the words that Adam dusted off, having been hidden away for years, to the aesthetic of the album design to the rousing acclaim he has received in his hometown of Montreal, there was something there. And then there is the music; simple yet complex, with sensuous poetry and haunting melodies delivered by an artist laying his soul on the line.
“an album of longing, sung beautifully in his father’s quiet, folky, thoughtfully achy style”
– NEW YORK MAGAZINE
From the first, oversold showcase at the tiny Upstairs Jazz Club that left almost one hundred people outside to a triumphant sold-out show at Metropolis as part of the Montreal Jazz Festival last summer, Adam was finally accepted at home. In English Canada he began selling tickets where none had been sold before – The Mod Club in Toronto, The National Arts Centre in Ottawa – and he played major festivals like the Winnipeg Folk Festival and Hillside to strong acclaim and superb venue sales.
“candid, sensuous and precise…strong clear songs about modern love. 4 stars”
– MAIL ON SUNDAY
“Like A Man”, released October 4th, 2011 on fledgling independent label Rezolute Music, became an instant hit in Quebec, debuting at #10 on the Quebec chart and #24 on the National Top 200 Chart. Sales have been steady for over 12 months with the commensurate dips and valleys associated with touring, media and advertising impact.
“‘Like A Man’ is a little beauty, a perfectly turned collection of measured, poetic, introspective, funny, philosophical and deeply romantic songs exploring what it means to be a man in love”
– THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
English Canada media highlights include two appearances on Q! with Jian Ghomeshi. Both were memorable but the first was astounding, with Jian tweeting to followers to get Adam into the Top 20 at iTunes. In the 24 hours after the show, the album shot up from #175 to #21.
“Elegant poem-songs”
– MOJO
The Quebec media story was overwhelming with unanimous accolades in French and English about the Montrealer who had finally come home. Since release, Adam has been covered in every major news outlet, has performed at the Fete Nationale event last June and has achieved a 2012 ADISQ nomination for “Best Album by a Quebecer in Another Language”. But there was one last holdout. Almost one year to the day after the release, he appeared on Quebec’s #1 rated talk show “Tout le Monde En Parle” on Sept. 30, 2012. Immediately after the program, the album shot into the Top 10 at iTunes nationally, peaking at #5 overall. These are his highest ever chart numbers there - remarkably, a full year after release.
“…Sweet Dominique and What Other Guy, compete with the best Leonard ever registered in the tower of song”
– Winnipeg Free Press
RSF supported tours include two full Quebec runs, a major Festival run, select English Canada dates and now, more than 12 months after release, a 21-date national tour starting in Vancouver mid-October and ending in Quebec City late November.
The phased marketing plan supported by RSF monies helped bring Adam’s presence into the digital age, building a loyal online fan community through Facebook advertising, YouTube sponsored video, CRM campaigns with relevant media partners, an iTunes 360 campaign and social media. Traditional tactics such as street postering, targeted radio and print advertising were also deployed.
“the musical reinvention Like a Man is his most acclaimed work to date”
– Canadian Press
Internationally, RSF helped fund five visits to Europe including a 35-date inaugural tour that saw Adam headline in prestigious cities and venues in the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Some festival highlights included supporting Bob Dylan and then Norah Jones in France earlier this year. The RSF also helped Adam gain a foothold in Australia and Korea for the first time in his career. These dates were aligned with local releases through an ex-Canada licensing deal with Cooking Vinyl.
“…a genuinely gifted singer-songwriter in his own right”
– Ottawa Citizen
In the tough to crack U.S. market, RSF support helped Adam tour twice, including a recent, successful run supporting long time co-conspirator Rufus Wainwright. U.S. media profile is increasing and a trusted label partner in Decca Records is in for the long haul with Adam.
“…reminiscent of Pere Cohen’s older recordings, although Adam’s tenor is sweeter and higher than his father’s granular baritone”
– Toronto Star
The RSF has been critical to the success of Adam Cohen’s “Like A Man”. It has helped drive sales of 32,000 units to date in Canada and another 20,000 units around the world and enabled Adam to deliver unforgettable, high-quality live experiences to demanding audiences across the globe. With the high costs of travel, personnel and day-to-day expenses involved in touring, the RSF was essential in these activities. We now have a solid foundation of fan affinity and media profile that we can build on for future tours and releases. Thanks in large part to the Radio Starmaker Fund, the fascinating story of this man carrying on the family business will continue…
