It is my pleasure in my third year as Chair of the Radio Starmaker Fund to present our outstanding results from the fiscal year 2009-2010.

One of the primary goals of the Starmaker Fund from the time it was created by broadcasters in 2001 was to provide stable and consistent artist centered funding for touring and marketing support. One of the statistics we are most proud of is that 90% of all applications submitted this year were approved. This has been remarkably consistent over the past 8 years and illustrates that the Fund has been designed carefully to ensure that qualifying applicants can rely on support from us year over year. We were able to maintain this very high measure of consistency through more than 350 applications this year approving nearly $7 million in total funding.

Another important issue for Starmaker is to ensure that the funding is distributed broadly over new and emerging talent and that we are not funding the same artists repeatedly. This year we have maintained a standard of more than 25% of the approved funding going to artists who were new to the Fund. With new successful artists accessing the Fund each year we can be sure that our funding is being optimized to provide opportunities for a new generation of stars for the future.

This year saw a new initiative for Starmaker called “Festival Music House”. This was a three day event held during the Toronto International Film Festival which showcased the talents of 15 Canadian artists to the international film industry. This initiative was 100% funded by Starmaker and produced on our behalf by an excellent team of people from Arts&Crafts headed by Jeffrey Remedios. It was chosen as one of the “Top 10 Moments of TIFF” by MacLean’s magazine. We are looking forward to building on this great event over the next few years with our record industry partners at CIMA and CRIA.

I am very excited to see these excellent results. It is very satisfying for me as a broadcaster to see such a significant broadcaster contribution put to such good use supporting emerging Canadian artists every year. It is also comforting to know that broadcasters have committed more than $45 million to Starmaker for the future. I look forward to working further with the Board and the very capable staff here at Starmaker to continue these very high standards for supporting artists in Canada.
